Board Meeting Minutes
September 14, 2010
 
Attending:  Carole Jacoby, Lydia Inghram, Cheryl Weiner, Maureen Sipes, Goldie Block, Debbie Gordon, Barbara Kletzman, Doris Gray, Dale Shaw, Iris Bachman, Bonnie Penix,  Betty Ruben, and Sharon Cohen
 
Meeting called to order at 10:10 by Carole Jacoby.
 
Minutes:  Iris moved and Goldie seconded the minutes be approved as submitted.  Motion carried.
 
Fundraising: Cheryl reported there are 83 reservations for the 160 seats purchased for the Cosmo Cafe on 10/10/10.
$250 was donated from the Gordon-Goldstein Foundation by Debby Gordon.  Tickets will be given out at the door and parking vouchers are available for the 10th and L Street garage.The committee will be meeting on 9/15 to finalize the caterer and other details.  Cheryl would like help from the Membership Committee to make calls to new members.
Upcoming events are  the J. Gladstone Institute on Nov. 30th, Chico Wardrobe Party (date has been changed to 2/13), Rio Jazz Band on either March 12th or 13th, and a May Mah Jongg event.
 
Membership:  No report 
 
Community Service:  Barbara reported that as of August 31st, 202 blankets had been donated to local hospital as well as several hats and booties.  NCJW is providing yarn to women at Sister Nora's Place.  The knitting group is meeting the 3rd Wednesday of the month at Einstein Center.
Family Shalom: Betty reported that the Naomi Ackerman program is scheduled for Oct. 27 at Mosaic Law, and the event has many community sponsors.  It will be free for teens, and community members will be asked to pay $5.
Elder Abuse:  Betty reported the committee is meeting monthly under the leadership of Irene Jenkins.   There will a panel discussion on fraud and financial abuse on Nov. 16 at Beth Shalom.  Regular community meetings on various issues concerning elder abuse will be scheduled.
 
Public Affairs:  No report
 
Treasurer:  Maureen Sipes presented 2010-11 budget and report of income($8,890.08)  and
expenses ($5,424.80) to date. 
 
Financial Secretary:  Debbie Gordon printed a spreadsheet of current membership list.  She reported there are 12 unpaid members and 5 resignations.  She will send 2 sets of labels to Dale.
 
Program:  Doris Gray reported the Opening Meeting featuring Pastry and Politics is scheduled for October 14th at the Einstein Center, and Kosher refreshments will be served.  A planning meeting is scheduled for November.
Upcoming events include annual Chanukah party at Einstein on Dec. 8, Founder's Day on Jan. 16, and Crocker Art Museum tour and lunch on April 3.
 
Bulletin/Website:  Iris Bachman
Deadline for next bulletin is Oct. 15, and Iris will send out email reminders of what she needs.  She requested that she be given the dates for all planned events. Carole reported the seal we were going to order to advertise the website was not what we wanted, and we will consider making our own labels.
 
Historian:  Debby Gordon will look into the possibility of using the archives at the Center for Sacramento History.  Materials would be donated to them, but we would have free access with photocopying privileges.

Old Business:
 
National Convention:  Carole and Lydia are planning to attend.  There is $1,500 subvention to those making a commitment to serve in a leadership position. 
Policy & Procedures and By-Laws
Last updated in 1994.  Update will be postponed until after we receive suggestions from National.
Section Brochure:  Carole is working on a new one, but she will have something for the 10/10/10 event.
Beth Shalom Food Faire: Volunteers are needed to sit at NCJW table.  Iris will be there 9:00 to 11:00 and Sharon from 11:00 to 1:00.  Goldie will make phone calls to new members.
 
New Business
Women of Distinction: Hadassah needs nominee from our section.   Iris will chair that committee.
 "Race to Nowhere" is being shown by Shalom School on 10/4.  The Board was not in favor of sending out an email, but would consider including community events in the bulletin if given enough notice.  Board members were encouraged to tell their friends about this event.
Power of the Story, a workshop for non-profits is being offered to help organizations promote their programs.  Carole and Lydia would like to attend.  The registration of $95 will be paid by Section.
Press releases should contain consistent boilerplate text, provided by National, at the end of the document that describes the organization.
