Board Meeting Minutes
March 8, 2011
The meeting was called to order at 10:10 A.M. by Lydia Inghram
Members Present: Lydia Inghram, Carole Jacoby, Cheryl Weiner, Joan Bories, Barbara Kletzman, Maureen Sipes, Bonnie Penix, Doris Gray, Iris Bachman, Goldie Block, Barbara Kletzman, Irene Jenkins, Jean Halfant and Dale Shaw
The minutes of the board meeting of February 8, 2011 submitted by Sharon Cohen were amended and approved. Bonnie Penix made the motion, seconded by Cheryl Weiner.
Board Reports
Dale Shaw spoke about the process for bulk mailings and the mailing labels needed for them. The Financial Secretary provides the labels, since she has the most up-to-date information.
During the course of the discussion, it was noticed that Board job descriptions are needed, in order to be clear about the duties of each officer and committee chair. Carole Jacoby will send the duty statement format to the chairpersons and officers, so that each can outline her responsibilties as she understands them. These job descriptions should be brought to the next board meeting. Ultimately, the goal is to provide board training and to update our by-laws.
Fundraising: Cheryl Weiner
1. Chico's event on Feb.13 – was the most successful fundraiser held at that store. The net will be around $300.
2. Mah Jongg on May 12 will be an evening event at the Arden-Dimick Library
3. Upcoming events – None other at this time.
Membership: Joan Bories and Renee Schoch
1. Membership Brunch on Feb. 6 - Lydia commented that further outreach should be made to those who did not come to the membership brunch.
2. Life Membership Event – no news at this time, but some suggestions were made as follows:
a. charge a lower price to life members for our events.
b. honor life members at paid-up membership event
c. give cocktail party to honor life members
d. create a “no balance due” statement to send to life members at dues time
Community Service: Barbara Kletzman
Status of Projects:
2. Knitting and Crocheting- 183 blankets, 83 hats and 58 pairs of booties since September – Barbara would like donations of yarn. It was suggested that she could ask Michael’s and JoAnn’s retail stores for donations, or send an email out to the membership.
3. Elder Abuse programs 2/27 and 3/7: Irene Jenkins said that both programs were successful, well attended (30 at AERC), with good questions and follow up. Deborah Braver did a great job. Irene would like a $100 donation sent to Mosaic Law as was done for Beth Shalom. All expenses will ultimately come out of the Federation grant.
4. Sister Nora’s Place – going along well.
5. Crisis Nursery- Carole noted that the semi-annual Gifting Grandma’s luncheon and fashion show will be on April 13. Cost $40.
6. Family Shalom: Betty Reuben – no report
Public Affairs: Beryl Michaels emailed a report on the joint meeting with Hadassah on Reproductive Rights held on 3/3 Expenses totaled about 143.65, but Beryl and Jessica Birch contributed $41.10 for flyers and flowers, Hadassah paid $52.55 for refreshments, leaving the cost of $50 for KOH for NCJW’s contribution. 45 people attended, many from NCJW. Iris and Irene commented on the well-run program.
Carole will request copies of the sign in sheets so the Membership committee can contact non-NCJW members about joining and so they can be contacted regarding the Voices for Reproductive Choices campaign.
Treasurer: Maureen Sipes submitted the treasurer’s report.
Financial Secretary: Deb Gordon
Deb provided a list of changes to our membership roster since the last meeting. They will be listed in the next Bulletin.
Corresponding Secretary: Bonnie Penix
No correspondence.
Committee Reports
Program Committee: Doris Gray
1. Crocker Art Gallery 4/3 – publicity needs to be added to website.
2. Paid up membership and installation is currently planned for
June 26, but could be changed in order to invite a speaker, like Sharon Gustafson.
The program committee will meet on March 17 to move the event along.
3. May plan a summer event in a pool/backyard setting.
Bulletin/Website: Iris Bachman
1. Next Deadline/articles April 15 will be the next Bulletin deadline. The Crocker event will soon be advertised on the website. Iris suggested that a committee be formed for input about the website. For now, it is Carole Jacoby and Iris Bachman.
Historian: Barbara Kletzman – photographic record is up to date.
Tributes: Janet Ehrlich – For the month of March, Judy Persin is handling Tributes, while Janet is away. If it hasn’t yet been noted, a Council note should go to the family of Estelle Miller and a memorial notice should be put in the Bulletin.
Old Business
1. National Convention in Dallas: Highlights of the Convention : For Lydia, the most exciting event was when Nancy Pelosi and her daughter received “Women Who Dare” awards. Cheryl Weiner said the speakers (from NOW, the State Department personnel combating anti-semitism, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Nancy Ratzan) were outstanding and inspiring. One in three women have had to terminate a pregnancy. Check out Jackie Speier on YouTube. For Carole, the sense of “sisterhood” and the message about “connecting the dots” from NCJW’s resolutions to our sections actions, was memorable and energizing.
2. NCJW Shabbat at Beth Shalom- will be rescheduled
3. Emancipation Shower at Beth Shalom 4/3 later in the day than our Crocker event.
New Business
1. Nominating Committee Marianne Laws will be contacted, since the committee must have its slate of officers available for the next NCJW Bulletin
2. Board Training after Installation – may bring in trainer, date to be announced.
3. Convention report about the Voices for Reproductive Choices campaign was set for discussion after the adjournment of the board meeting
Next Meeting: April 12, 2011 at 10:00a.m. at AERC.
Host: Joan Bories
Adjournment: 11:45 a.m.
